Autism Disorders

Autism is a spectrum disorder. Presenting symptoms and characteristics can vary, and individuals impacted by autism can be bright and verbal, as well as non verbal with lower cognitive abilities.

The most prominent symptoms of the disorder include impaired social communication, academic difficulties, behavioral anomalies, and motoric delays.

All children with autism disorder possess unique strengths that can be cultivated.

Our client is always the individual with autism.

Link works with teachers to develop these diversities in order to maximize potential for the autistic person.

Social communication anomalies are the main, hallmark characteristic of autism disorders. In fact, determinations regarding diagnostic category are made through social and verbal development.

For example, individuals diagnosed with autism disorder typically either begin to develop speech and lose it, or speech does not develop until much later in the developmental process. In contrast, individuals diagnosed with Asperger Disorder also possess anomalies in terms of social communication.

In order to determine whether a child is autistic, specific testing must be conducted. This testing should be done by a neuropsychologist. Link Autism Leadership partners with various neuro-psychologists in developing specific academic plans.

Generally, every child with autism has unique needs and strengths. Decisions about education for the child with autism are typically developed by an educational team. This team often consists of parents, teachers, administrators, therapists, and the educational psychologist.

Working with the team can often be an intimidating process. Link Autism Leadership works as intermediaries to help parents better understand this process, while working with educators in their framework.
